Part numbering methods overview
Use a good part numbering system so that the clerks at the front counter can find the parts quickly and not create unnecessary customers line-ups. The part number is entered when you first add the inventory item record to the inventory database or use Data Load function to add a group of parts to the database.
From the Navigator select Inventory and Purchases > Inventory > New item
OR Inventory and Purchases> Data Load
There are a number part numbering methods to chose from as follows:
- Enter part numbers as displayed on the item packaging (this becomes troublesome if you order the same item from different suppliers and each supplier gives a different number).
- Enter barcode numbers as displayed on the item packaging or barcode labels you create using your own part numbers. This saves confusion at point of sale.
- Enter the manufacturer's part numbers.
- When adding a new inventory item, click [Generate] in the Add New Part window to have a part number automatically assigned. The number is created from the category the part belongs to plus a unique number.
- Create clever numbering by description for items that don't have packaging.
